Our

Mission

Hinsdale Humane Society, a private nonprofit organization, operates the Tuthill Family Pet Rescue & Resource Center with a mission to transform the lives of animals and the people who care for them. We provide exceptional care and adoption services for animals, including those animals with special placement needs, while serving as a steadfast voice for those who rely on us for their well-being. Through community education, advocacy, and innovative programs, we nurture the human-animal bond, promote animal welfare, and champion the compassionate treatment of every animal in our care and beyond.

Our

Vision

Our vision is a world where animals experience compassion, care, and respect, free from suffering and neglect, both in shelters and in homes. We strive to build a community that values the well-being of every animal and sets a standard of kindness that extends far beyond our borders.

Our

History

In 1953, appalled by conditions of the local dog pound, six Hinsdale women took it upon themselves to remake the unheated and filthy shelter into what would become the Hinsdale Humane Society. The founders began with three goals: to educate the public in the proper training and handling of animals; to arrange for humane disposal of unclaimed and unwanted animals; to provide a safe and sanitary pound to replace the unsatisfactory facilities. Once established, HHS became the first humane society in DuPage county.

Expansion

Over its 72-year history, the Hinsdale Humane Society has expanded well beyond its humble beginnings.

Operation

Today, HHS operates at the Tuthill Family Pet Rescue and Resource Center, a state-of-the-art facility allowing for innovative services and programming.

Facility

At three times the size of the original facility, HHS is able to welcome more animals to the shelter, facilitate more adoptions, and better serve the community as a whole.

Never deviating from the initial vision of its founders, the Hinsdale Humane Society is proud to maintain its title as a leading community resource, offering educational opportunities to the public through training classes, volunteering, and its robust youth humane education program. HHS also continues its commitment to preserving the human-animal bond through, among other offerings, regular pet food pantries, pet therapy visits, and adoption services.
