The Paws and Play Getaways Day Trip Program

Mongo (FKA “Lalo”) with Animal Behavior Manager, Jamie Kennedy

Did you know that dogs who received brief trips outside of the shelter were four times more likely to be adopted?

Well, that’s why the Hinsdale Humane Society is proud to offer the Paws & Play Getaways Day-Trip program. Shelters can be a stressful place, especially for our more sensitive residents, and interaction with people is known to lower cortisol levels in shelter dogs

Paws & Play Getaways offers our dogs a much-needed break from the kennels while giving them real-world experience in the community! These outings reduce stress, provide enrichment, and give us valuable insight into each dog’s personality – all of which helps them to find their forever.

We know it works – just ask Mongo (formerly-known-as “Lalo”).

Becoming a foster or regular volunteer isn’t always accessible to everyone, so this program offers a flexible opportunity for members of the public to spend quality time with our dogs.

Dog Day Out FAQs

What is provided?

In addition to an appropriate leash, collar, and harness, you will be provided with an HHS-branded backpack filled with treats, a portable water bottle, toys, and more!

Like people, not every dog will enjoy a day full of hiking, and not every dog wants to Netflix-and-chill! We will do our best to ensure that you are equipped with knowledge about the dog’s favorite activities, snacks, and toys!

Some evergreen choices include:

  • Scenic walks
  • Car rides (bonus points if pup cups are included!)
  • Relaxing at home
  • Cuddling on the couch
Will I be able to share all of the cute photos that I’ll take?

Absolutely! We run on animal pictures, and you will receive further information when you meet with our Animal Behavior Team.

Your next step will be to meet with our Animal Behavior Team at the shelter. During your meeting, our team will:

  • Review how the program works
  • Get a feel for your comfort level and experience with handling dogs
  • Introduce you to some of our dogs
  • Explain our different walking tiers and what each means
  • Answer any questions that you have!
