If you find a stray domestic animal, your first step will be to contact the non-emergency line for the police department of the city in which the animal was found. This is especially important as 80% of lost pets are found within a one-mile radius of their homes.

Should you believe that the animal may indeed be a lost pet and you are able to complete the outlined steps safely, you may also choose to do the following in addition to reaching out to the non-emergency line of the police department:

Report

Report the pet you found on PetCo Love Lost. If possible, share a photo to better help reunite them with the family who may be looking for them.

ID

Check for any tags with identification and contact information. If no identification is present, assistance from the local police department is unavailable, and you can safely transport the animal, you may bring it to a PetCo, veterinarian, or shelter in order to scan for a microchip.

Share your Petco Love Lost flyer on social media platforms, and reach out to local veterinarians and shelters, as they may know to whom the pet belongs.
